The Risk of Getting Out of Bed

January 2025

We often expect that a New Year will begin a new chapter in our lives. The start of a new year suggests a clean slate, a beginning, a starting point. We think in terms of putting the past, along with its failures and foibles, behind us in the hopes of making the future different and better. A humorous prayer I heard years ago might put things in perspective.

Dear God,
So far today, I've done alright. I haven't gossiped, lost my temper, been greedy or grumpy, been nasty, selfish or overindulgent. I am very thankful for that.  But, in a few minutes, God, I'm going to get out of bed. And from then on, I'm probably going to need a lot more help.    Amen

As they say, many truths are told in jest. Most of us are all too aware of our shortcomings and how we bring them into our daily lives. Why is it so hard to change? Where will we find the help? How can we do life differently this year from last year? There are many excellent resources available in our society to help us with inner growth and change. So many that it is sometimes hard to choose what is right for ourselves. Let us begin by going to our Source. As the scripture reminds us:

“The Lord is at hand. Have no anxiety about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which passes all understanding, will keep your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7  RSV

Then there are those worries or anxieties that come to mind the minute we wake up. Some of the issues that confront or challenge us might include: our physical or mental health, the past or future, work, relational issues, safety, failure, grief, guilt, anxiety, finances, age, loneliness, and faith.

In this disquiet, the presence of  God may help renew and guide us. Here is another  scripture that offers us faith’s perspective;

“For I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. I can do all things with Him who strengthens me.”  Philippians 4:10-13 RSV

Consider starting tomorrow morning by reading these verses. You need not be alone. Invite God to join you as you face your day. And find other people of faith so you can support and encourage one another. As we learn from God and are guided by his words and love, we might find both hope and the possibility for real change in our lives.

It begins anew every morning whenever we finally get out of bed.

Blessings,

Tom
